As one of the few Black women to grow up in the predominately white Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Liz Rocher isn't exactly thrilled to return to her hometown. Nevertheless, she packs away past traumas and shows up to attend the wedding of the only friend who helped her survive life in the Rust Belt. But the night of celebration quickly sours when the couple's daughter, Caroline, goes missing in the woods. This reminds Liz of her classmate Keisha Woodson, another Black girl who disappeared between the trees...and was later found with her chest cavity torn open and her heart removed.
While the search for Caroline ensues and Liz starts digging through the town's history, she uncovers evidence that threatens to expose a decades-long pattern of Black girls who have gone missing in the woods, only to be found dead later. As darkness creeps past the edge of the forest line, only Liz can find Caroline before it's too late.
